Social Media Optimization Toronto

social media optimization TorontoSocial media has been a hot marketing field for several years now. So much so that people think of search engine optimization (SEO) is a little passe. However, as a SEO marketer I must defend the importance of SEO. Google, Yahoo, and Bing have made my work harder each and every year. I remember the days when you could quickly rank pages in a matter of days for competitive keywords. Now ranking can take much much longer. Updates like Penguin and Panda have made the whole process complicated and a mine field to navigate. However, in contrast social media seems limitless in terms of potential traffic and opportunity and without the all the pesky Google animals.

So is how can SEO stay relevant?

Google is still the #1 source of traffic for most web sites. So SEO is far from dead or passe. But when it comes the social media SEO plays an important role. After years of being beaten down by the search engines many SEOs have developed sophisticated methods for achieving rankings. When these same skills are used on a social media site to optimize posts or profile suddenly the SEO is presented with very simple search technology. Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin all use their own internal search engines. Recently, Facebook added Bing to its search but for the most part it is using its own search technology. These social sites look solely at text and have none of the counter weights that Google puts into its search algorithms. So to a seasoned SEO social media optimization is child’s play.

So what is Social Media Optimization?

On Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin, Pinterest, and most social media sites we can create profiles and posts. Social media optimization means to make these posts or profiles easier to find within the social site. Linkedin is probably the best example of this because it provides the most detailed profiles to its users. When someone does a search on Linkedin the search defaults to searching for profiles. With 200+ million members on Linkedin standing out in the crowd can be difficult, but for the SEO it is not. By mentioning the right words in your profile and understanding the common searches you can create an optimized profile that will rank at the top of the search results. It is also important to note that sometimes these same profile end up ranking within the Google search results as well. For posts the optimization takes on a slightly different form when you need to understand which hashtags to use and how optimize the post for length and social impact. On Twitter I often will test out similar posts in order to gradually optimize the message for encouraging retweets and clicks of the links within the posts.
